LONDON PARALYMPICS: NIGERIA WINS 2ND GOLD MEDAL!

Nigeria has won a 2nd Gold Medal in the on-going London Paralympic Games. Ivory Nwokorie in the women's 44kg category lifted 109kg in Powerlifting.

Nigeria is now 7th in the overall medals table and the hightest ranked African country!

Gov Suswam asked by Benue State Assembly to sack commissioner

BENUE State House of Assembly yesterday directed Governor Gabriel Suswam to sack the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Conrad Wergba, within seven days.
The House gave the order following the alleged refusal of the commissioner to resign after the expiration of an ultimatum given to him to do so.
Wergba had allegedly made an uncomplimentary remark against the Assembly in his attempt to defend government’s stance on the allegation of delay in payment of workers’ salaries raised by the House, and had described the members as arm-twisting the Executive for “pecuniary motives.”

Lawyer to serve 6 months imprisonment for exam malpractice



The Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, Dr Tahir Mamman, on Thursday in Abuja disclosed that a recently qualified lawyer was convicted for malpractices during the school’s bar examination.
The director general made the disclosure at the Annual General Conference of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), decrying the increase in examination malpractices among law students.
He also berated some senior members of the NBA for encouraging malpractices by using their positions to influence the prosecution of defaulters.
Mamman said the management of the school would not relent in its effort to get rid of such lawyers, adding that they were capable of tarnishing the image of the profession.
“The recent increase in examination malpractice among law students is appalling and for three examinations running now, the school has registered increase in examination malpractices.
“Some recently qualified lawyers were caught writing examination for some resit students only three weeks ago.
“One was convicted three weeks ago and now serving six months imprisonment without option of fine in Kuje Prisons.
“Two are awaiting judgment while four others have just been arraigned,’’ he said.

Yakubu Adesokan wins Nigeria's first Gold medal in London Paralympics

Nigeria's powerlifter, 33 years old Yakubu Adesokan today at the ExCel Center, London broke his own record twice to win the Gold Medal at the on-going paralympic games in the men's 48kg-class.

He lifted a weight of 180kg.

SSS personnel details leaked online



News agency, AP is reporting that records of SSS personnel have leaked on the internet.
AP is reporting that personnel records of former and current members of our top domestic spy agency, including home addresses and names of immediate family members, leaked onto the Internet in a threatening message that claimed to come from a radical Islamist sect, Boko Haram.

The leak of personal data of more than 60 past and current employees of Nigeria's State Security Service remained easily accessible on the Internet for days and had details about the agency's director-general, including his mobile phone number, bank account particulars and contact information for his son.

A businessman who claims to be an associate of Andy Uba says he owns the Ibori bribe, and the money was meant for PDP.
A new twist has been added to the ‘$15million Ibori’ bribery scandal as a self acclaimed associate of Andy Uba, a former presidential adviser, claimed ownership of the money.
In 2007, Mr. Uba, an assistant on domestic affairs to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, delivered the cash bribe to the former Director of Operation of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Lamorde, allegedly on behalf of James Ibori, former Delta State Governor.
However, a businessman, Chibuike Achigbu, told a Federal High Court, Wednesday, that he is the rightful owner of the money, and Mr. Uba was just a courier.
Mr. Achigbu, the Chief Executive Officer of Lagos based, Chimons Gas Limited, said the money was to help finance the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Visa: U.S lists Nigeria as priority nation

The U.S has listed Nigeria, Brazil and China as priority nations on its visa application following a surge in consular demands, Patty Neary, a consular officer, said on Wednesday.

Neary told newsmen in Abuja at the country’s embassy weekly briefing that more than 40,000 visa applications had so far been processed in Nigeria this year.

President Goodluck Jonathan Tuesday in Abuja accepted the resignation of one of the key members of his cabinet, Professor Bart Nnaji as Minister of Power, with immediate effect in order to guarantee the ongoing reforms and privatisation in the Power Sector.

The president, who in a press statement by his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, thanked the former minister for his services to the country and wished him well in his future endeavour, was said to have decided to accept the resignation, following Nnaji's admission that companies linked to him had submitted bids for one of the successor companies created from the unbundling of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN).

UK goes tough on Nigerian women coming for child delivery:


The United Kingdom has said it will no longer tolerate abuse of its National Health Service, NHS, by Nigerian visitors after a Nigerian woman reportedly flew to the UK to have her baby in a British hospital.

The unnamed Nigerian woman was alleged to have received treatment totalling £10,000 but returned to the country after having had her child without paying anything.

BENUE STATE: Group takes lawmaker to EFCC over alleged N1.6m scam



A CIVIL society organisation, Concerned Benue Citizens Coalition, popularly referred to as the G10, has taken a member of the Benue State House of Assembly, Kenneth Iyo, to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly misappropriating the state’s N1.6 million.
In a petition released yesterday to the press in Makurdi by its national president, Philip Agbese, the group maintained that it had also sent the petition to the inspector general of police and other relevant anti-graft agencies.

Ex-militants securing NNPC’s oil pipelines
THESE are good times for former Niger-Delta militants, going by reports of their fortunes.
Mujahhid Dokubo-Asari, leader of the Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force, earns $9 million (N1.420billion) annually, guarding pipelines of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) , The Wall Street Journal reported yesterday.
The paper, which is well respected in the financial world, reported that the contract was sealed last year.
It said: “Last year, Nigeria’s state oil company began paying him $9 million a year, by Mr. Dokubo-Asari’s account, to pay his 4,000 former foot soldiers to protect the pipelines they once attacked. He shrugs off the unusual turn of events. “I don’t see anything wrong with it,” said the thickly built former gunman, lounging in a house gown at his home here in Nigeria’s capital.”

Bolorunduro village in Ondo State was thrown into mourning last Wednesday when a family of five died after eating amala (yam flour). The names of the deceased were given as Michael Onoja,56; his wife, Comfort 42, Monday, 24; Patience, 21; and the eight-year-old grandchild, Joy Odoh. A police source told our correspondent that when Onoja returned from his farm on the fateful day, he instructed his daughter, Patience, to prepare amala for the family to eat.

The police in Lagos have arrested a prophet and two others for interrogation in connection with the murder of a popular Disc Jockey, DJ Sulaimon Age.
Sulaiman, father of seven, who was also a staff of Distance Learning Institute, University of Lagos, Akoka, Yaba, was murdered at Ajenifuja Street, Bariga, Lagos, southwest Nigeria.

Nigeria heading for disintegration – Ex-defence chief



Former Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. Gen. Alani Akinrinade (retd), has said Nigeria is on the road to disintegration and can only be rescued when the citizens agree to discuss issues affecting it.
He added that such discussions must border on what the ethnic nationalities in the country genuinely desire.
Akinrinade, who is also the convener of Yoruba Assembly, spoke to journalists in Lagos on Monday against the backdrop of the conference of South-West leaders holding on Thursday in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Father Jailed For Impregnating Daughter



A 54-year old generator repairer has been sent to jail for allegedly sleeping with his 16-year old daughter and impregnating her in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.
The man, Mr. Tajudeen Sanni, who hails from Oyo State, was charged to the Family Court, Kakawa, Lagos, for impregnating his daughter and subsequently sent to Ikoyi Prison as he could not perfect his bail condition on time.

Senate asks CBN to suspend introduction of N5,000 notes



The Senate committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions has asked the CBN to suspend the introduction of the newly announced N5,000 into circulation until it has been fully breached. This introduction it says would have far reaching fiscal implications on the economy.

FG to rebuild UN building in Abuja with N2.6billion

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Balla Mohammed has revealed in a visit to his Foreign Affairs counterpart, Mr. Olugbenga Ashiru in the company of the UN in Nigeria officials that the Federal Government has approved the reconstruction of the bombed UN buliding in Abuja with the sum of N2.6billion.

The visit was to mark the one year anniversary  of the bombing of the UN building on August 26, 2011 which was claimed by the dreaded Boko Haram sect. 23 people died in the attack.

It was also revealed that N600m had already been spent on providing alternative accommodation for the UN Agencies whose offices were affected in last year's incident.

Floods kills 10 in Adamawa and 4 in Niger


Heavy rains have caused severe flooding in some parts of northern Nigeria.

4 people including 2 brothers lost their loves in Niger State and 10 others are reported to have lost their lives in Adamawa State due to the floods.

Al-Qaeda plots fresh attacks on Nigeria, others

As the country struggles to curb the violent activities of the Islamic fundamentalist sect, Boko Haram, international intelligence agencies have uncovered plans by al-Qaeda, to launch fresh attacks on Nigeria, Ghana and two other African countries.
Al-Qaeda, which was founded by the late Osama bin Laden, has launched attacks all over the world.
Investigations by SUNDAY PUNCH authoritatively showed that the targeted countries were receiving help from Western nations on how to prevent the onslaught.
However, it was not clear if the attacks would be launched by al-Qaeda in the Maghreb or the main terrorist organisation in the country.

Neil Amstrong, first man to set foot on the moon, dies at 82 years

The austronaut, Neil Amstrong who made history as the first man to set foot on the moon died today at the age of 82 years from complications following a heart surgery recently.

You may remember him for these words he spoke as he set foot on the moon for the 1st time: " That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind"

He commanded the Apollo 11 landing on the moon on July 20, 1969.

Immigration arrests 13 Chinese for prostitution

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) on Friday in Abuja paraded 13 Chinese nationals who were arrested on suspicion of engaging in prostitution in the country.
NIS spokesman, Joachim Olumba, said the suspects were apprehended in Lagos following a tip off from an informant.

AIDS -Like disease found in Asia

Researchers have identified a mysterious new disease that has left scores of people in Asia and some in the United States with AIDS-like symptoms even though they are not infected with HIV.
The patients’ immune systems become damaged, leaving them unable to fend off germs as healthy people do. What triggers this isn’t known, but the disease does not seem to be contagious.
This is another kind of acquired immune deficiency that is not inherited and occurs in adults, but doesn’t spread the way AIDS does through a virus, said Dr. Sarah Browne, a scientist at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Breivik - the Norwegian mass murderer jailed for 21 years


The Norwegian mass murderer, Andres Breivik has been declared sane and sentenced to 21 years in prison.

Last year, in July, he committed acts of mass murder, shooting and bombing which left 77 people dead in the worst peace time tragedy recorded by Norway.

During his trial, his defence counsel presented him as an insane person and unable to grasp the magnitude of the crimes he committed. Clinical tests were conducted and the doctors certified him sane, making him fully responsible for the acts of premeditated murders and fit to stand trial.

He has said he would not appeal the ruling.

PEACE AMBASSADOR licence plates illegal-FRSC


The Federal Road Safety Commission has said that the use of Green numbers/letters on white background on licence plates by private individuals is illegal.

This is mostly used on vehicles with licence plates marked 'PEACE AMBASSADORS'.

Users of such plates have been advised to change them to the regular private licence plates.

Kidnapped ESUT VC freed and reunited with his family



The Vice-Chancellor of Enugu State University of Technology, Prof. Cyprian Onyeji, who was kidnapped on the 15th of August has been freed.

He was abducted by yet to be identified gunmen in a brazzen attack at the university gate in Enugu on his way to work. They were said to have been upto 10 gunmen that conducted the attack.

At an instance the kidnappers asked for N200m ransome but it is not clear at this moment how much, if any ransome was paid for his release.

He was found on Thursday night around Igariam area.

Subsidy scam trial: You can’t travel abroad now, court tells Tukur and two others


The Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja on Friday refused to grant an application brought by three directors of Oil Marketing and Trading Companies who requested the release of their passports to enable them travel abroad for Hajj and business.
The three directors are among several others standing trial for fraudulently collecting fuel subsidy money without importing the product.
The Vacation judge, Lateefat Folami, who presided over the case, in a ruling on the application brought by the trio of Mahmud Tukur, son of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman, Bamanga Tukur; Abdullahi Alao, son of prominent businessman, Abdulazeez Arikesola-Alao; and Felix Ochonogor, said that she cannot overrule the earlier order granted by the trial courts.

Three-month-old baby stolen in Benue church

 A strange woman was said to have stolen a three-month-old baby during a mass at St. Theresa's Church at Anyiin in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State. Sources, who were at the church where the incident took place, told newsmen that on Sunday, an unknown woman, who was waiting at the entrance of the church, offered to help the mother of the stolen baby, Mrs. Mbatumun Ose, to hold the child who was being backed by an older sister. The unsuspecting mother, Daily Sun gathered, innocently gave the baby to the strange woman but asked her to follow her to seat on the front pew in the front row of the church where she usually sat.

Cynthia Osokogu's Murder: More Victims Open Up




Victims of the two suspected killers of Cynthia Osokogu have opened up that they were also drugged, raped and robbed.
Cynthia, the daughter of General Frank Osokogu (retd.) was allegedly lured to Lagos, Southwest Nigeria, by his Facebook friends, Nwabuzo Okumo and Odera Ezekiel, drugged, raped and strangled on 22 July.
Following the shocking incident that happened in a hotel in Festac and the arrest of the two suspects, two of the female victims also came forward to narrate that they had suffered a similar fate in Lagos.
The two women reportedly went to Festac Police Command to write a statement about how they were drugged, raped and robbed by the suspects now in police custody.

CBN introduces N5,000 notes


The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Thursday announced that it is going to introduce N5,000 note into circulation.

Unlike earlier speculated, the faces of three prominent Nigerian female activists are to be used on the new note.

They are:
1) Margaret Ekpo (1914-2006), Late politician and social mobiliser,
2) Hajia Gambo Sawaba (1933-2001), Late politician and activist
3) Funmilayo Kuti (1900-1978), Late politician and women’s right activist.

Also the N5, N10 and N20 notes will be coined while N50, N100, N200, N500 and N1, 000 will be redesigned  to inculcate new security features.

The Police in Lagos on Wednesday paraded two suspects in the murder of Cynthia Akuzogwu Udoka, daughter of a retired General.

One of the suspects, Ezekiel Nnechuwu Olisa Eloka, 23, told the police that they killed Cynthia because they believed she had a lot of money. But after taking her life, they did not find any significant amount of cash.
Both Eloka and Echezona Nwabufor, said they met the victim on Facebook and invited her to come to Lagos to buy goods at cheap prices.

ODESHI: Armed robber shot 20 times survives

This man was shot 20 times and survived!
Identified as Ayodeji Ojo along with 3 other members of his gang were notorious robbers along Ibadan/Akure Expressway and Osu/Ilesha Road in Osun State. They extorted passengers and sometimes raped their female victims. Luck ran out on them when members of a vigilante along with police opened fire on them when they were operating.

One of the armed men was killed, he was shot and captured whle two others escaped.

Was it charm or did the bullets miss the vital organs in his body? Whatever the case, it is a good thing when evil people are stopped from harming others.


According to Ojo, "We are four members in our gang. We robbed and raped passengers along Ibadan/Akure Expressway. We came from Lagos State to rob passengers on the expressway.
