A 400 level Medical Laboratory student of Ebonyi State University,
EBSU, Mr Michael Onwe, was at the weekend found hanging dead in his room at
no.16 Ibe street in Abakaliki, the state capital.
Vanguard investigations revealed that his neighbours became suspicious after
they did not see him for some time and alerted the Police who came and forced
his room open to discover his dangling
lifeless body.
A neighbour who spoke with Vanguard noted that the late Micheal Onwe had
spent over 6 years in the University, first as a Medical student, but was
offered an alternative course in Medical Laboratory in the same institution
after failing twice in his MB examination.
According to him, late Onwe was a native of Umuogodoshe in Mgbo town, Ohaukwu
local government area of Ebonyi State. He disclosed that the deceased had before
his death alleged threat to his life by a secret cult group, a report which was
made to his parents and to security agencies for investigation.
Police Public Relations Officer, Ebonyi State command, ASP John Eluu who
confirmed the incident, said the body has been deposited at the Federal Teaching
Hospital Abakaliki for an autopsy. He added that the Police had commenced
investigations into the matter with a view to unraveling the cause of his death.
The PPRO also said all evidence at the moment points to suicide as cause of
death but said the Police was yet to ascertain why Onwe took his own life as he
did not leave any note behind. "The issue is that he committed suicide and the
cause has not been known as he did not leave any suicide note behind."
