The federal government is monitoring social media accounts of Nigerians who are suspected of having ties with Boko Haram.

According to The Punch, revealed that through covert operations which will be going on for a while, security agencies hack into the Twitter and Facebook accounts of personalities that are being monitored by the Federal Government.

Reports say the administration of the former President, Goodluck Jonathan approved the request by security agencies to spy on targeted sections of the population, mainly religious extremists and radicalised individuals. It was gathered that the project is being handled by some foreign firms, including an Israeli firm, Elnit System.

The Punch correspondents learnt that it includes hacking of phones, emails accounts, social media and bugging of telephone conversations.
