Driving Against Traffic (ONE WAY) Attracts 3yrs Imprisonment In Lagos


Driving against traffic, popularly known as one-way driving, now attracts a three-year jail term, while a first offender gets one year term in addition to the forfeiture of his/her vehicle to the Lagos State government.

Also, a bullion van driving in a direction prohibited by the law will be forfeited to the government, while abandonment of vehicles on the highway will attract three years imprisonment or an option of fine of N50,000. These were spelt out in a road traffic bill passed into law on Friday by the state’s House of Assembly.

Sponsored by the executive arm of government, the bill was aimed at regulating vehicular movement and imposes sanctions on any erring vehicle operator in the state.

According to Schedule (1), Section (2) of Traffic Offences and Penalties, in riding a motor-cycle against traffic and riding on the kerb, median or road setbacks, first time offender will attract N20,000.00, subsequent offender N30,000.00 or the riders and motor-cycle will be impounded.

Smoking while driving will attract N20,000.00 among other penalties.
