The Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration Control, Dr. Paul Orhii, has said that two women, Ms. Florence Bagidi and Florence Saawuan have died after they were given banned Gentamycin injection in Makurdi, Benue State.
Orhii, who disclosed this at a press conference in Lagos on Wednesday, said the cause of death in the victims had revealed that both victims had received banned gentamycin 280mg injection.
He said, “We want to alert Nigerians that there is banned gentamycin 280mg injection in circulation.
” We are investigating two separate reports of deaths of two women who died following the administration of the banned drug.”
Orhii said in spite of the fact that gentamycin had been banned, recalled and de-registered by the agency in October 2010, doctor, hospitals and pharmacies still stocked the drug in their establishment.
He noted that the drug had initially being banned after several cases of adverse reactions, including instant deaths, deafness in children, bleeding, anaphylactic shock and hypertension were reported in many patients who took the drug in Nigeria.
Orhii said although the agency had raided pharmacies and wholesales outlets to ensure that the drug was out of circulation, many health care professionals, quacks were still administering the drug on patients.
According to him, the injection in the two victims were administered by a quack, a secondary school holder and a patent medicine operator.
Orhii said, “We have obtained the injections administered and we are working with the homicide section of the police on the laboratory anaylsis of the exhibit.”
He, however, warned that any doctor, hospital, pharmacy or health care provider that administers banned drugs on patients would be prosecuted.
“Hospitals, pharmacies and other outlets still stocking this products are hereby advised to immediately surrender them to NAFDAC,” he said.
