INEC fixes election dates for Bayelsa and Kogi states




The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled the governorship elections of Bayelsa and Kogi States for November and December respectively. The dates were set on July 9, after the electoral body's meeting. The last day for the submission of lists of candidates and their particulars for the Governorship and Deputy Governorship candidates is October 7 for Bayelsa and November 14 for Kogi states.

Dr. Chris Iyimoga, the Chairman, Information and voter Education Committee in a statement said the Governorship Election in Bayelsa would hold on Saturday, December 5, 2015, while that of Kogi State would hold on Saturday, November 21, 2015.

''Formal notices of the elections shall be issued on or before September 5, 2015 and August 23, 2015 respectively, in accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Act.

''Campaigns by political parties shall commence on July 24, 2015 and end on December 3 in Bayelsa and November 19 in Kogi.

INEC has asked the political parties and aspirants to conduct their primaries to nominate candidates for the elections between August 25 and September 15 for Kogi and September 7 and 30 for Bayelsa State. The parties were urged to note that campaigns outside the stipulated dates were unlawful and liable to persecution.
