Court Sacks PDP Lawmaker in Benue State




A Federal High Court that sat on Wednesday in Makurdi has sacked a Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) Lawmaker in Benue State. The PDP member of the Benue State House of Assembly representing Oju 2 State constituency, Mr Matthew Ire of the PDP over illegal substitution of name. 

The presiding Judge Jusitce Binta Nyako, on Wednesday ordered that Matthew Ire who contested the PDP House of Assembly primaries on November 29th in 2014 to vacate the seat. Ire contested along side Agi Adigwu and Jairus Erube. Ire who was declared winner scored 10 votes while Adigwu got 11 votes and Eruba 5 votes. Ire was handed the party flag and declared the winner.

The INEC issued him a Certificate of return. 

Adigwu approached the Federal High Court to seek redress, praying the court to reverse the party's decision. Justice Nyako ruled that it was illegal for PDP  to substitute the name of the winner of the primaries. Ire who did not have the highest number of votes was declared winner. Nyako ordered that Ire vacate the seat with immediate effect.
