No fewer than 10 persons were killed in a clash among residents of the border communities in Ado Local Government Area of Benue State and Ngbo community of Ebonyi State. We learnt that the clash erupted in the early hours of yesterday among the Idoma people of Benue and Igbo of Ebonyi State.
The Chairman of Ado Local Government Area, Mr. Benard Ochepa, decried what he called the level of devastation his people have suffered over the persistent at-tack on them by the Ngbo people.
Ochepa said: "The attack was really intense; it is sad that despite efforts by the state government to ensure that this crisis was brought to an end, the people we gave land to inhabit have now resorted to killing my people, it is sad indeed. "In fact, the situation is even more painful when you realise that our people have been displaced from their homes and their communities made desolate."
The development yesterday prompted a cancellation of all official engagements of the Benue State government.
As at the time of filing this report, the Benue State Security Council, chaired by the Deputy Governor, Chief Steven Lawani, had conveyed an emergency meeting over the matter.
The police spokesman, Ejike Alaribe, said one death was recorded in the clash, added that the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Christopher Katso, had directed the Area Commander in Charge of Otukpo to restore peace in the troubled communities.
